Pre-Reading: Paragraphs

Reading is made up of paragraphs. A paragraph is a group of sentences. Paragraphs tell you a complete set of thoughts.

Here is an example of a paragraph:

Rosa went for a walk. She walked on the grass. She saw trees and flowers. She saw children playing. She saw birds flying. Rosa was happy. Later, Rosa got tired. She walked home.

Look again at what you will be reading.

  • Find the first paragraph. Then, find the first sentence. Find the last sentence. How many sentences are in the paragraph?

  • Find the beginning and the end of the next paragraph. How many sentences are in this next paragraph?

  • How many paragraphs are on the first page of what you will be reading?

Understanding paragraphs will improve your reading skills.
