Reading Hard Words

If you understand what you are reading about, you can start to read hard words. Hard words are the words you skipped when reading out loud before.

Go back to the first paragraph. Pick out a hard word.

  • Pick out a small part of the word that isn’t hard. Say that small part out loud.

  • Look at the rest of the word. Think of the sound of the letters. Try to say the rest of the word.

  • Read the sentence the hard word is in. Does the word you’ve read sound like it fits in the sentence?

  • If it sounds like it fits in the sentence, you’ve read the hard word!

Pick out three more hard words. Use these same steps to read them.

Starting to read hard words will improve your reading skills.
